Snow and ice close schools, museums, senior centers around county

GENESEE COUNTY – Residents woke up Tuesday to slippery roads, school closings and the prospect of more snow and rain throughout much of the day.

The National Weather Service in Flint has issued a winter weather advisory is in effect today and this evening for all of southeast Michigan.

Rain and snow will continue before 3 p.m., then rain, snow, and sleet between 3-4 p.m., followed by rain, possibly mixed with snow after 4 p.m., the NWS said on its website.

The high temperature is expected to be near 35 degrees with an east-southeast wind of 5 to 8 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of around 3 inches, the NWS said.

Tonight more rain is likely, mainly before 11 p.m. and it will be cloudy with a low around 34 degrees and an east-southeast wind at 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight.

The chance of precipitation this evening is 70 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

On Wednesday, the NWS said more rain is likely, mainly after 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 40. Southeast wind are 3 to 7 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New precipitation amounts will be between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

According to Kim Day, TLM supervisor for the Genesee County Road Commission, the light rain started early Tuesday around 1:30 a.m. The road commission’s night crews were in at 5 p.m. and stayed all night until the day shift arrived at 5 a.m.

Day said the districts arrived at 3 a.m. to get out on their routes and treat the roads.

“We will continue to monitor and treat the pavement as needed today,” Day said in an email. “Be careful out there as the weather conditions could impact your travels, slow down and drive with caution.”

There are many closings for Tuesday, including most schools – public and private – in Genesee County and the Flint Cultural Center.

The Sloan Museum of Discovery is closed due to the current road conditions and for the safety of its staff and guests. The Sloan expects to re-open all four galleries on Wednesday with regular hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Longway Planetarium is also closed and there will be no field trips or public shows today.

The Flint Institute of Arts Museum and Art School is also closed and all classes are canceled.

The Flint Public Library and Genesee District libraries are closed.

Around Genesee County most schools are closed today, including Atherton, Bendle, Bentley, Burton Glen Academy, Carman-Ainsworth, Davison – St. John Preschools, Davison, Flushing, Genesee Christian School, the GISD, Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Burton, Grand Blanc, International Academy of Flint, Kearsley, Kettering University, Mott Community College, Richfield Public School Academy, St, John Vianney, St. Paul Lutheran School and Swartz Creek.

Also closed are the Burton Senior Center, Carman-Ainsworth Senior Center, Davison Senior Center, Flushing Senior Center, Forest Township Senior Center, Mundy Township Senior & Enrichment Center and the Swartz Creek Area Senior Center.

Genesee Health System Day Programs and the Mott Children’s Health Center are closed.
