Senior Winter Games kicks off month of fun

DAVISON TWP. — The opening ceremonies for the Senior Winter Games 2024 were held Monday at the Davison Area Senior Citizen Center, 10135 Lapeer Rd.

Celebrating its 44th year, the Senior Winter Games got off to a start this year with opening remarks from Misty Moen, chairperson for the Senior Winter Games.

A blessing was offered by Bruce Burger of the SWG board and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by members of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners – Dr. Beverly Brown, Ellen Ellenburg, James Avery and Michelle Davis.

Also in attendance was State Rep. David Martin (R-Davison).

The participating seniors were led in the Senior Winter Games pledge by Karen Reid, vice chairperson of the SWG.

“You all know we have these games and its all in friendship and fun,” Reid told the crowd before administering the pledge. “So everyone, enjoy themselves!”

Instructor Tobi Williams then led a Drums Alive presentation by The Gym For Her fitness in Flushing.

The performance was followed by the first official competition of the month long Senior Winter Games – a pie eating contest for men and women contestants.

The women’s winners are Gold – Carol Dewitt; Silver – Cheryl DuShane; and Bronze – Sharon Huntley.

The men’s winners are Gold – Terry Pattillo; Silver – Tom Ellenburg; and Bronze – Ray Lum and Doyle Diane.

Major sponsors of the Genesee County Senior Winter Games 2024 include the Genesee County Senior Millage, John Davis, St. John’s Parish Hall in Davison, Blackwell Catering Co. and the county’s 16 senior citizen centers.

Here is the schedule for the remaining events in February:

Friday, Feb. 9 — Yahtzee at 9 a.m. and Hand, Knee & Foot at 1 p.m. at the Thetford Senior Citizen Center, 11495 Center Rd., in Clio.

Monday, Feb. 12 — Shuffleboard for men will be held at 10 a.m. and Shuffleboard for women at 1 p.m. at the Davison Senior Citizen Center, 10135 Lapeer Rd., in Davison Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 13 — Competitive table tennis at 10 a.m. and Recreational ping pong at 2 p.m. at the Davison Senior Center, 10135 Lapeer Rd., in Davison Township.

Wednesday, Feb. 14 — Cribbage at 10 a.m. and pinochle (single deck) at 1 p.m. at the Krapohl Senior Center, 5473 Bicentennial Dr., G, in Mount Morris Township.

Thursday, Feb. 15 — Sudoku at 10 a.m. and free throw at 2 p.m. at the Brennan Senior Center, 1301 Pingree Ave. in Flint.

Friday, Feb. 16 — Softball toss at 10 a.m. and free throw at 2 p.m. at the Brennan Senior Center, 1301 Pingree Ave. in Flint.

Monday, Feb. 19 — Euchre at 9 a.m. at the Grand Blanc Senior Center, 12632 Pangels Ave. in Grand Blanc and baking at 2 p.m. at the Burton Senior Center, 3410 S. Grand Traverse St., in Burton.

Tuesday, Feb. 20 — Pickleball at 10 a.m. at the Loose Senior Center, 707 N. Bridge St., in Linden.

Wednesday, Feb. 21 — Miniature golf at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Clio Senior Center, 2136 W. Vienna Rd., in Clio.

Thursday, Feb. 22 — Line dancing at 1 p.m. at the Grand Blanc Senior Center, 12632 Pangels Ave. in Grand Blanc.

Friday, Feb. 23 — Dominos (Mexican train) at 9 a.m. and spelling bee at 1 p.m. at the Flushing Senior Center, 106 Elm St., in Flushing. Also, arts and crafts at 1:30 p.m. at the Swartz Creek Senior Center, 8095 Civic Dr., #2, in Swartz Creek.

Monday, Feb. 26 — Name That Song at 10 a.m. at the Eastside Senior Center, 3065 N. Genesee Rd., in Flint. And Pool for Women at 10 a.m. and Pool for Men at 2 p.m. at the Hasselbring Senior Center, 1002 W. Home Ave., in Flint.

Wednesday, Feb. 28 – Frisbee Toss at 10 a.m. and ladder golf at 1:30 p.m. at the Carman-Ainsworth Senior Citizen Center, 2071 S. Graham Rd., in Flint Township.

On Thursday, Feb. 29 the Closing Ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. at the St. John’s Parish Hall, 450 Dayton St., in Davison.
