MCC awarded $156,000 grant to support student and immigrant success

FLINT — Mott Community College (MCC) has been awarded a $156,000 grant by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s (LEO) Office of Sixty by 30, Global Detroit and the Michigan College Access Network to implement a new initiative called Pathways to Success: Empowering Immigrant Futures (EIF).

The grant is part of the $1.5 million Student and Immigrant Success Grants to support 12 Michigan community and tribal colleges in their innovative efforts to increase college completion for adult learners, international, immigrant, refugee or first-generation students.

MCC was awarded the grant because the College has established strong connections with local nonprofits that provide services to foreign-born residents. Current partners include the Arab American Heritage Council (AAHC), Latinx Technology and Community Center (Latinx Center), and the International Center of Greater Flint (ICGF).

“Mott Community College is thrilled to introduce the ‘Pathways to Success: Empowering Immigrant Futures’ initiative, a comprehensive project committed to creating a nurturing environment for immigrant, refugee, and first-generation students,” said Dr. Michelle A. Nelson, Assistant Vice President for Student Success Services at MCC. “This initiative includes strategic outreach, community partnerships, sustainable resource initiatives, and crucial support services, all with the goal of empowering students and facilitating a smooth transition into education and training for the immigrant communities in the Greater Flint area.”

The EIF initiative is focused on engaging in four key areas to support and empower immigrant students and families in our community. These initiatives are:

• Empowering Ethnic Community Partnerships

• Becoming a Trusted Connector

• Accelerating Immigrant Career and Educational Success

• Institutional Advancement and Relationship Building

Through the implementation of these four initiatives, the EIF program aims to make a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of immigrant students and their families. By reducing barriers to the enrollment process and providing services to help support their immigration resettlement, MCC is committed to establishing a comprehensive system to help immigrant students and families pursue their goals and aspirations successfully.
