FLINT TWP.—The Genesee District Library (GDL) has named Olivia Williams as the new Genesee Valley Center librarian. Prior to joining GDL, she volunteered at the Genesee-Johnson Library, then worked as a page and a library assistant. As the Genesee Valley Center librarian, Williams plans to provide relevant content for her patrons as well as a welcoming environment.
According to Williams, the role of public libraries in a community is about much more than books.
“We are an informational hub available to provide communities with new knowledge and learning experiences, as well as access to technology,” she said.
Williams said the biggest challenge for libraries today is the misconception that they are “just books.” With a Genesee District Library card, patrons have access to over 13 million digital items, including eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music, magazines, television series, comics and graphic novels.
Williams holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Michigan-Flint, and a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University. — B.G.
