Bud Groom

BUD GROOM, 83, of Tucson, AZ (formerly of Grand Blanc), died Tuesday, July 17, 2018.

He was born in Flint, on October 6, 1934 to James and Lucille Groom. He graduated from Flint Central in 1952, and married Mary Virginia (Ginger) Carrell in 1955. Together they raised four children in Flint and Grand Blanc.

Bud was revered in his field as a third-generation jeweler, goldsmith and diamond/ colored stone expert. As a teen, he joined the family business, Roy Groom & Sons Jewelers, and studied watchmaking at Bradley University. He earned numerous certifications in the studies of diamonds and precious gems, and became owner of the business in 1979.

He was a member of many professional and civic organizations, including the American Gem Society, Gemological Institute of America, Independent Jewelers Organization and Flint Rotary Club. He was also a long-time member of Kirkridge Presbyterian Church.

Bud retired in 1996 and wintered in Tucson, AZ, with Ginger for several years before moving there full time in 2011.

Surviving are son, James A. (Jim) Groom, III of Flint; daughter, Jana (John) Waters of Goodrich; and son, Jeffrey (Kathy) Groom of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jack and Bryce Waters of Goodrich, Cole and Ellie Groom of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gina Groom Gracey in 2009; and by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ginger, in 2017.
