“It feels really good,” said Young. “I didn’t think that this was ever going to happen.”

Young is the only player in Genesee County to make the First Team, as well as the first All-State pitcher under Goodrich coach Bob Foreback.

“He is an extremely hard worker and was the core of our team,” said Bob Foreback of Young. “When he was on the mound we had a great chance to win. Because of his work ethic, he deserves all the good things that he is getting.”

Young pitched 59 innings over the entire season, allowing 13 earned runs on just 40 hits. He finished with 21 walks, 98 strikeouts and nine wins on the mound.

“His most impressive stat is 98 K in 59 innings,” said Goodrich coach Bob Foreback. “That’s almost 2 K’s per inning. It’s easy to win when the rest of the team only had to get one out per inning!”

Young, a right-handed starter, has three pitches: a change-up, a curve and a fastball, which he calls his “goto pitch.” His maximized his arsenal in Goodrich’s 4-3 victory over Brandon in the district semifinals on June 2. Young pitched a complete game while earning the win with seven strikeouts. The win paved the way for the Martians to claim their second straight district championship.

“They couldn’t really hit me,” said Young of his semifinal performance. “You control the game more on the mound. When I’m pitching, I don’t really listen to anything. I just throw.”

Young will further his baseball career at Jackson Community College, where he will also study nursing. After receiving looks from Lawrence Tech and Grand Rapids Community College, he ultimately chose Jackson for its coaching staff and the potential ability to move onto to a larger, Div. 1 program after success on the field.
