On May 25, Grand Blanc High School Center for Student Success (CSS) was represented at the Michigan Alternative Education Organization’s STARS Competition at Delta College.

The five CSS student council members and sponsor, David Clement, planned for five months for the competition. Over the course of the planning all of the students have grown incredibly as leaders. Their main project was a presentation of their Suicide Awareness Week, which was implemented at GBHS March 19 - 23. Each day consisted of different events for students, culminating in a powerful suicide awareness video shown to all GBHS students.

In total, the group won eight awards at the competition: 1st place—Project Demonstration of Suicide Awareness Week: "This is not how my story will end", 1st place--Genius Kit (1 1/2 hours to create an object using given materials based on the quote "Be the Change You Want

To See in the World", 1st place—Life Smarts (single elimination jeopardy style competition),

2nd place—Group Management Decision-Making, 2nd place--Public Speaking (Emily Bailey)

3rd place—Interviewing (Robert Burton), 3rd place--Career Portfolio (Brennan Worrell-Childers),$1,000 Scholarship—Levi Graunstadt.

David Clement, with the CSS Center For Student Success explained that CSS (Center For Student Success) is a "school within a school" program designed to help students recovery credits, graduate on time, and find success after high school. We focus on building relationships and making school a positive experience, in part by providing service, mentoring, and leadership opportunities.
