Time running out to claim Tuition Incentive Program benefits

LANSING — Time is running out for eligible individuals who graduated in 2014 with a high school diploma or equivalent to claim their Tuition Incentive Program benefits, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury.

The grant program—known as TIP — encourages eligible Medicaid recipients to complete high school by providing college tuition assistance. Eligible TIP students have four years to begin their TIP benefits or permanently forfeit eligibility.

For the class of 2014, this means TIP students must be in TIP by the upcoming fall 2018 semester or risk becoming ineligible to receive available grant dollars that help cover college expenses.

High school students between 12 and 20 years old who have or have had Medicaid coverage for 24 months within a 36-consecutive month period were identified by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services as having met the program’s eligibility requirement.

Beginning with the 2018-19 academic year, all TIP students must complete and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid—FAFSA for short—to receive TIP benefits.

MIOSHA targets blight removal projects to protect workers from asbestos and other hazards

LANSING — This spring, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) relaunched its state emphasis program (SEP) that increases MIOSHA presence on blight removal projects across the state to address hazards such as asbestos and lead that pose health threats to workers. The SEP will be in effect through February 28, 2019. MIOSHA’s inspections of job sites helps ensure employees involved in blight cleanup are properly trained and equipped to work with hazardous materials in a safe manner. Blight reduction hazards include potential exposure to lead, asbestos, cadmium, silica and other chemicals. During the 2016-17 SEP, MIOSHA conducted 30 inspections of residential blight removal job sites. MIOSHA issued citations to 43 percent of the employers who were inspected under the program. MIOSHA issued citations for 62 violations including seven violations of the Michigan Asbestos Abatement Contractor Licensing Act and one violation of the Michigan Asbestos Workers Accreditation Act. Seventy-one percent of the violations were categorized as serious. Initial penalties equaled $67,600.

MIOSHA’s Asbestos Program ensures that people working with asbestos are properly trained and the individuals performing asbestos removal comply with rules governing the work activity. Available at no cost to employers is MIOSHA’s Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division to help employers develop and implement long-term safety and health programs and comply with MIOSHA regulations.
