This Oratorical contest takes place all over the world with all of the contestants speaking on the same topic. This year’s subject was “Where are the Roots of My Optimism”.

The Grand Blanc students showed their passion for speaking and their passion for making the world a better place to live. Everyone in the audience was inspired and left feeling optimistic about the future. The speeches were judged based on Poise, Content, Delivery, Presentation, and Overall Effectiveness.

The overall 1st place winner and the 1st place winner of the High School level was Annabeth Towarnicky, who will move on to the Regional Contest.

The top middle school students were: 1st Place, Riya Achuri, 2nd Place Ava Ward, and 3rd Place JayVion McDowell. A small excerpt from Annabeth’s Speech: “For me I choose the road less traveled, I choose to create my own habit of optimism. The everyday choices we make feed into how the world is shaped and how society is formed and acts in response to it. This is the Butterfly effect. When an action affects all of our surrounding neighbors. When one ounce of pessimism is fed into our community, it creates a very pessimistic atmosphere which is what our world is becoming. We need a change; we need more optimism fed into our daily lives to create a more optimistic place. By choosing to look at the positive side of things around us and positive behaviors we will create a habit of optimism.”

The Optimist Club gives special thanks to Laura Jones from Grand Blanc West Middle School and Pat

Nelson from Grand Blanc East Middle School for helping these outstanding students prepare for the contest.

We also thank our sponsors: McDonalds, Brose Electric, and Giffels Webster for sponsoring the event.

The Regional Contest will be held on April 21st, at St. Stevens Missionary Baptist Church, 69 S. Astor,

Pontiac, MI 48341 and starts promptly at 9 a.m.
