Martians wrestling sees four place at state finals

Photo by Timothy Mucciante DETROIT – The Goodrich wrestling team had six wrestlers compete in their respective weight classes at the individual state finals held at Ford Field on Friday and Saturday. Out of the six, four of them placed within the top eight of their weight class.

At 119 lbs., Caleb Teague finished second overall. Teague opened with a win by pin over Ethan Spagnoli and followed it up with a win by fall over Nick Buchanan of Coldwater. In the semis, Teague won a 9-4 decision over David Stepanian of Warren Woods-Tower. Teague then lost a 10-8 decision against Austin Franco of Niles in the first-place match.

Juwan Vines went 3-2 on the day to take fourth place at 171 lbs. Vines opened with a 5-1 decision victory over Carlson’s Garrett Bunea and then defeated Niles’ Davin Simpson by a 5-3 decision. Vines then lost by an 18-3 technical fall to Ryan Ringler of Cedar Springs. In the consolation semis, Vines defeated Cade Foster of Gaylord by pin, but lost a 16-2 major decision to Lowell’s Austin Engle in the third-place match.

At 189 lbs., Honour Kline went 4-2 to also take fourth place. Kline lost his opening match by fall against John Shelton of East Grand Rapids. In the consolation bracket, Kline defeated Tecumseh’s Ryan Roberts by a 7-3 decision. Kline then won a 5-1 decision against St. Johns’ CJ Krum and a 6-4 sudden victory over Petoskey’s Jaylin Mitchell. In the consolation semis, Kline was victorious in an 11-4 decision over Shelton. Kline then lost a 3-0 decision against Taye Ghafiali of Warren- Fitzgerald in the third-place match.

Blake Coffell was 4-2 to place fifth at 285 lbs. Coffell defeated Allendale’s Adam Ginn by fall to open the bracket, but lost a 3-1 sudden victory against Marshall’s Owen Miller. Coffell then pinned CJ Sheir of Warren Woods- Tower and won a 3-1 sudden victory over Lowell’s Tyler Delooff. In the consolation semi, Coffell lost a 3- 1 sudden victory against Joe Markham of Gaylord. Coffell then defeated Holly’s Blake Querio by a 3-2 decision in the fifth-place match.

Carson Turnbow lost his opening match to Northwest’s Reese Darrow by a 2-1 decision at 125 lbs. and then lost a 3-0 decision against Lowell’s Zeth Strejc. At 160 lbs., James Penfold lost an 11-9 decision to Gus Reynolds of Chelsea. Penfold then defeated Tavian Groves of Redford Union by pin, but lost by fall to Huron’s Cody Brenner to be eliminated from the bracket. ­— K.R.
