Goodrich wins district; Grand Blanc ousted

Photo provided GOODRICH – The Goodrich girls’ basketball season came to a close on Tuesday night when the Lady Martians fell to Freeland 70-55 in overtime. Freeland held a one-point lead at halftime, 27-26. Goodrich picked up the pace in the third quarter to grab a 45-41 lead. Freeland then outscored Goodrich 12-8 to even the score at 53-53 and force the overtime. Freeland’s defense then took the win as it held Goodrich to just two points while adding 24 of its own.

Last Friday, the Goodrich girls won the district title after defeating Lake Fenton 65-48. Goodrich held a massive 46-15 lead at halftime.

Ryan Darby paced the Lady Martians, pouring in 26 points. Maddie Voelker chipped in 16 and Molly Voelker had eight.

Goodrich defeated Flint Powers 55-42 in the district semifinal. Maddie Voelker put up 27 points 16 and had nine rebounds. Molly Voelker pulled down 12 boards and added seven points. Georgia Berger had nine points.

In the district opener, Goodrich routed LakeVille 62-28. Darby led the Martians with 25 points. Maddie Voelker had 15 points, six assists and three steals. Olivia O’Brien had snagged seven boards and had three assists. — K.R.

Class A at Carman-Ainsworth

Grand Blanc lost to district champ Carman-Ainsworth, ranked No. 7 in the state, in the district semis last Wednesday, falling 54-22. In the other semi, Flushing beat Swartz Creek 48-28, then lost to Carman-Ainsworth in the title game 63.45.

Carman-Ainsworth took on Davison in the Class A regional at Davison Tuesday, with Carman-Ainsworth winning 63-44. Carman-Ainsworth will play a tough Saginaw Heritage today for the regional title. – L.P.
