Goodrich wrestling wins district, sends eight to regionals

Photo by Mark Redmond GOODRICH – The Goodrich wrestling team hosted the Div. 2 districts on Saturday, where Goodrich dominated and had eight wrestlers place in the top four of their respective weight classes to qualify for regionals at Gaylord on Saturday. Of the eight wrestlers, six took first place, one took second and one took third. The top four in each weight class qualify for regionals.

Goodrich faced wrestlers from Armada, Auburn Hills-Avondale, Brandon, Croswell-Lexington, Fenton, Holly, Imlay City, Linden, Marysville, North Branch, Notre Dame Prep, Pontiac Academy for Excellence, Pontiac, St. Clair and St. Mary’s Preparatory.

At 119 lbs., Caleb Teague took first after going 3-0 on the day. Teague opened with a bye and then defeated Mason Forsythe of Holly by fall. In the semis, Teague pinned Xzavier Suess of Cros-Lex to advance to the first-place match where he defeated Eric Pawlaczyk of Imlay City by a 7-4 decision.

In the semis, Turnbow came out on the winning end of a 9-1 major decision against Brandon’s Curtis Centrino. Turnbow then defeated Jack Culvey of Brandon to take first.

Jimmy McMillan took third at 135 lbs. for Goodrich. McMillan opened with a bye and followed it up with a win by fall against Cros-Lex’s Wyatt Lamb. In the semis, McMillan lost an 8-3 decision against Fenton’s Jayden Rittenbury to land in the consolation bracket. McMillan then defeated Americo Milani of St. Mary’s Prep by a 16-5 major decision. In the third- place match, McMillan topped Caleb White by a 9-5 decision.

At 140 lbs., Dominic Edwards finished in second. Edwards defeated Andrew Miller of Auburn Hills- Avondale by pin. In the semis, Edwards then defeated Fenton’s Mario Ramirez by a 21-6 technical fall, but lost to Nick Gates of Marysville by a 6-1 decision in the first-place match.

James Penfold, who only wrestled one meet during the regular season this year, took first at 160 lbs. for the Martians. Penfold pinned Fenton’s Luke Zywicki in the quarterfinals and won by fall against Linden’s Uzziah Delgado in the semis. Penfold then defeated Jared St. James of St. Clair by fall at 3:33 to take first.

At 171 lbs., Vines opened with a win by pin over North Branch’s Emmanuel Copes and followed it up with a win by fall against teammate Kevin Patterson in the quarter finals. Vines then defeated Xavier Herman of Cros-Lex by fall in the semis. In the first-place match, Vines, topped Holly’s Cade Dallwitz by a 6-4 decision.

Honour Kline took first at 189 lbs. Kline pinned Chris Sawyers of Auburn Hills-Avondale and won a 23-10 major decision against Holly’s Kolten Steele. In the final match, Kline won a 12-7 decision against Nathan Nowik of Armada.

Blake Coffell also added a first-place finish for Goodrich at 285 lbs. Coffell defeated Fenton’s Devin Fuller by a 3-1 decision and Joe Harper of Imlay City by a 12-0 major decision. Coffel then pinned Michael King of Pontiac to take first.

At 103 lbs., Jason Henrie lost his opening match to Imlay City’s Dakota Sandzick by fall at 1:01. Tristin Katulski was also in action at 130 lbs. for Goodrich, but fell out of the bracket after going 2-2 on the day. Katulski defeated North Branch and Armada, but lost to Cros-Lex and Linden.

Carter Lauinger, 145 lbs., was also eliminated after going 1-2 on the day, beating Pontiac, but losing to North Branch and Aurburn Hills-Avondale. At 152 lbs., Sam Fisher opened with a win against Zarruh Suponkulov of St. Mary’s Prep, but lost backto back matches against Marysville and Linden. Kevin Patterson opened with a win over St. Clair at 171 lbs., but then lost to Vines to land in the consolation bracket. Patterson then defeated St. Mary’s Prep, but lost to Linden.

Last Wednesday, Goodrich took home the Div. 2 district title at Cros- Lex. Goodrich defeated Imlay City 60-32, followed by a 42-23 win against Cros-Lex.

Against Imlay City, 10 Martians wrestlers won their matches. At 119 lbs., Teague defeated Pawlaczyk by fall. Turnbow then pinned Austin Torres at 125 lbs. Katulski also won by fall over Mason Phillips. At 140 lbs., Lauinger pinned Paris Houghten. Penfold won by pin over Rickey Guerrero. Fisher defeated Zac Hellebuyck by fall at 160 lbs. Vines won by fall against Marshall Grayvold. Patterson, 189 lbs., and Kline, 215 lbs., both won by void. At 285 lbs., Coffell pinned Joe Jackson for the win.

Goodrich was victorious in nine matches against Cros-Lex. Teague pinned Jack Scheland at 119 lbs. Turnbow won an 8-3 major decision against Suess at 125 lbs. McMillan, 135 lbs., won a 7-1 decision against Wyatt Lamb. At 145 lbs., Edwards pinned Devin Dominique. Penfold added a win at 152 lbs. on a 6-3 decision against Vincent Scaramuzzino. At 189 lbs., Vines won by pin against Austin Czenkus. Kline defeated Blake Falter by an 8-2 decision at 215 lbs. Coffell added a win by fall against Nicolas Puebla.

Goodrich hosted the Div. 2 regionals on Wednesday following press deadlines facing Holly. The winner of the two then wrestled against Auburn Hills-Avondale or Marysville for the regional title. The winner advances to the team finals at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on February 23 and 24. – K.R.

GRAND BLANC: The Bobcats had seven wrestlers qualify for the regionals at the Div. 1 individual districts last Saturday at Bay City Western. Grand Blanc competed against wrestlers from Alpena, Bay City Western, Davison, Carman-Ainsworth, Flushing, Lapeer, Midland, Midland Dow, Saginaw Arthur Hill, Saginaw Heritage, Swartz Creek, Traverse City Central and Traverse City West.

Brody Kemper at 119 led the Bobcats, finishing second overall after losing a 12-6 decision to Midland’s Mateo Diaz in the championship match. Prior, Brody Kemper pinned Lapeer’s Gavin Monschau at 2:20 in the semifinals and Midland’s Louis Serafin at :44 in the quarterfinals.

Will Miller at 103, Connor Humphrey at 112, Jackson Turnbow at 125, Griffin Redmond at 135, Kaleb Kemper at 145 and Seth Dominguez at 152 each finished in fourth place in their weight class.

Miller lost a 3-0 decision to Bay City Western’s Jacob Coffey in the third-place match. Previously, Miller won an 11-1 major decision over Swartz Creek’s Matthais Kingen in the consolation semifinals.

Humphrey also lost the third-place match by 9-5 decision to Lapeer’s Gage Houghtaling. Humphrey pinned Midland’s Alex Noey at 4:18 in the consolation semis.

Turnbow lost a 5-2 decision to Swartz Creek’s Brecken Griswatsch in the third-place match after winning a 4-0 decision in the consolation semis over Midland’s Kindaro Kilinton.

Redmond lost his third-place match by 7-2 decision to Swartz Creek’s Joe Carpenter. In the consolation semifinals, Redmond pinned Robert Thomas 1:41.

Kaleb Kemper lost a 6-5 decision to Traverse City West’s Wylie Edick in the 145 lbs. third-place match. Kaleb Kemper won his consolation semifinal match by 8-2 decision over Midland’s Jacob Gomola.

Dominguez lost a 3-0 decision to Midland Dow’s Dustin Fletcher in the third-place match after winning a 3-1 decision over Midland’s Matt Waier in the consolation semifinals.

The regional qualifiers will compete against the Troy district winners in the individual regional championship on Saturday at Clarkston High.

On Feb. 3 at the KLAA Individual Championships, Kaleb Kemper recorded his 100th career win at the varsity level.
