Grand Blanc goes undefeated at Romeo

Photo by Austin VanDaele ROMEO – The Grand Blanc wrestling team went 4-0 in the Romeo Team Tournament on Saturday, defeating Richmond 42-6, Romeo 63-12, Utica 60-17 and Yale 52-12.

Grand Blanc dominated the mats as Connor Humphrey at 112, Griffin Redmond at 140, Amier Hatcher at 145, Kaleb Kemper at 152, Seth Dominguez at 171 and Drew McCullough at 215 all went 4-0.

Humphrey won by two pins, a forfeit and a 6-1 decision over Yale’s Brendan Connelly. Redmond won by three pins and a forfeit, including a pin over Romeo’s Carson Kohl at 1:28 and over Yale’s Hunter Marriot at 0:39. Hatcher recorded three pins and won a 4-2 decision over Richmond’s Robert Halligan. Kemper also had three pins and a major decision over Yale’s Noah Bradshaw. Dominguez won by pin three times and a 4-2 decision over Richmond’s Charles Vanpaemel. McCullough won all four matches by pin, including a pin over Utica’s Zach Dries at 0:54.

Ryan Madison at 119, Caleb Roumayeh at 135, Preston Loeffler at 160 and Jacob Sexton at 189 all went 3-1. Madison won two by decision and one match by forfeit. Roumayeh won by a forfeit and two pins, including a win over Romeo’s Ricardo Rodriguez at 2:32. Loeffler won by two decisions and a forfeit. Sexton won by pin, forfeit and a 10-8 sudden victory over Utica’s Noah Komic.

William Miller also went 2-2 at 103 lbs. with a 10-5 decision over Richmond’s Emmet Kettle and a forfeit. Jackson Turnbow went 2-1 at 130 with pins over Utica’s Hunter Ali at 0:59 and Yale’s Conner Cowhy at 3:08.

GOODRICH: The Goodrich wrestling team was in action at the Detroit Catholic Central Invite on Saturday, where Goodrich placed 10th with 62 out of 17 teams. Detroit Catholic Central-Blue was first with 209.5, Brownsburg was second with 187.5 and Dakota was third with 156.

Honour Kline was the top wrestler for Goodrich, taking second at 189 lbs. Kline received a first-round bye and then defeated Oxford’s Austin Schlicht by fall at 5:04. In the semis, Kline won a 5-2 decision against Brendin Yatooma of Detroit Catholic Central. In the first-place match, Kline lost by a 17-2 technical fall to Brownsburg’s Nathan Walton.

At 119 lbs., Caleb Teague took fourth after Brownsburg’s Drake Campbell defeated Teague by a 3-2 decision. Teague opened with a first-round bye and 9-0 major decision win in the quarterfinals against Caleb Meekins of Westland John Glenn. Teague then loss a 9-6 decision to Chaise Mayer of Warren Woods-Tower to put him in the running for third.

Blake Coffell also placed for the Martians, taking fifth at 285 lbs. Coffell received a first-round bye followed by a loss to Brownsburg’s Reily Peterson by a 9-5 decision. Coffell bounced back in the consolation bracket to defeated Donald Farris of Westland John Glenn by a 9-0 major decision. In the fifth-place match, Coffell won against Detroit Catholic Central’s Steven Kolcheff by a 9-4 decision.

Juwan Vines took sixth at 171 lbs. after losing a 9-4 decision against Thierry Jean-Baptiste of Brownsburg in the fifth-place match. Vines opened with a 4-3 loss to Jean-Baptiste in the first-round to land him in the consolation bracket. Vines then topped Trey Barbour of Warren Woods-Tower by a 5-3 decision and Lake Orion’s Tyler Vestrand by fall to move on to the fifth-place match.

At 103 lbs., Jason Henrie went 1-2, opening with a win by fall over Brownsburg, but following it up with losses to Detroit Catholic Central by technical fall and Westland John Glenn by a 9-2 decision. Jimmy McMillan was also 1-2 at 135 lbs., defeating Lapeer by fall, but landing on the losing end of a 7-3 decision against Davison and 9-4 decision against Brownsburg. Sam Fisher, 152 lbs., tallied a 7-0 decision win against St. Johns, but fell to Detroit Catholic Central and lost a 13-0 major decision against Brighton. At 160 lbs., Kevin Patterson defeated Romeo by fall and Marysville by a 5-4 decision and lost to Oxford by a 13-2 major decision and Detroit Catholic Central by a 5-3 decision.

On Wednesday, Goodrich defeated New Lothrop 41-22. The Martians had nine wrestlers win their matches to help Goodrich take the win.

At 112 lbs., Autumn Teague defeated Jackson Knieper by fall at 4:02. Teague, wrestling at 125 lbs., beat Logan Wolford by fall at 4:08. At 130 lbs., Carson Turnbow defeated Logan Zell by fall at 4:21. Competing at 135 lbs., McMillan won an 11-0 major decision against Austin Barnette. At 140 lbs., Dominic Edwards won by 15-6 major decision against Will Taylor.

Patterson also won at 171 lbs., defeated Austin Wendling by a 2-1 decision. At 189 lbs., Kline beat Justin Carnahan by a 15-12 decision. Vines, wrestling at 215 lbs., won by fall in a tie breaker against Allan Jamick. At 285 lbs., Coffell beat Cameron Dusenberry by a 6-0 decision.

Goodrich hosted LakeVille and Montrose following press deadlines and will face Mt. Morris and Durand on Wednesday. – K.R.
