Same old Lions – just good enought to mess up draft

Fat Guy Corner
Jeff Day — Sports Columnist

The Detroit Lions provided a sweet road loss to the lousy Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. The performance so predictable by the “Liedowns” and I told you last week it would happen. The fact that they lost to a lame duck Bengals team is horrendous. Let’s also realize the Saints defeated the Falcons and Detroit had still had playoff life with a victory. This is why the fan base screams at the television and this football team year after year. They play right into the “Same Old Lions” tag they have been given for five decades. The Lions’ Jim Caldwell might have the best record in Lions’ modern era, but really, is that a huge accomplishment? I say no. The Lions have yet to win a division title under Caldwell. The 2016 season was on the table for the Lions yet they didn’t seize the opportunity and choked it away. Yippee, they back-doored their way in to get crushed by the Seattle Seahawks. The 2017 season they lost most of their home games that meant anything, like Carolina, Atlanta and Minnesota. This year’s team should have made the wild card with the talent they have on the football field. Jim Caldwell is not the total blame, but he is 75% responsible. How many slow starts and uninspired plays did the Lions display? The answer is many! I expect on “Black Monday”, the day after the last game is played next Sunday, to see Jimmy unemployed. The Lions’ fan base, the majority of us, want to see him out as the Lions’ head coach. I will be one upset Lions fan if he is not removed. I cannot stand his game management skills or motivating skills. The red challenge flag is glued inside his pocket because he never uses it. Jimmy, hopefully I can say don’t let the door hit you in the red flag! Bye bye? We shall see.

Sparty in Holiday Bowl today

The Michigan State Spartans will take on the Washington State Cougars in the Holiday Bowl today at 9:00 pm. This football game will be a test of great defense against great offense. The Spartans hang their hard hats on the defensive side of the football. This has

been a trademark at Michigan State and I love it. The Fat Guy loves defense on the football field. The Mike Leach coached team looks to score points, and lots of them. The Washington State quarterback Luke Falk is pretty darn good. I will say when under duress he will make mistakes, and lots of them. The Spartans will win this game with their stout defense. The Spartans’ offense just needs to produce some points and not lay a dud. The Fat Guy prediction: The Sparty Holiday Party 30 and Boo WSU 27.

Michigan in low-scoring contest

The Michigan Wolverines will take on South Carolina at high noon on New Year’s Day. The return of quarterback Brandon Peters is good news for the Wolverines. Michigan will also look to avenge the 2013 Outback loss to South Carolina. I do not look for many points to be scored in this contest. I would not be shocked if the first team to twenty points wins. The Fat Guy prediction: Go Blue 20 and Cock a Doodle Don’t Gamecocks 16.

The loss of Dick Enberg last week, who was a Central Michigan graduate, was very sad for me. Dick Enberg was one of “Oh My” favorites! RIP Mr. Enberg. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
