The Part I exam was a forty-question multiple choice test given at 130 high schools throughout the state.

Grand Blanc High School had 20 students who qualified as finalists in the competition. They are: Veronica Alfaro, Taras-Michael Butrie, Diego Dionne, Mark Fisher, Sophia Hamelink, Catherine Huang, Edward Huang, Eric Huang, Nitish Khindri, Ha Young Kim, Kyle Kirby, Nisha Krishan, Joel Linden, Noah Ray, Rehan Saharan, Saareya Sahlool, Jonathan Stokes, Jacob Waun, Hope Welter and Austin Zhang.

On Dec. 6, the 1,000 finalists, including 18 of those 20 students, competed in the Part II Exam which consisted of five challenging problems. The competitors are required to write out solutions to the problems along with mathematical proofs (or explanations) justifying that their claims are correct.

Mathematicians from the Michigan Section of the Mathematics Association of America volunteered their time to grade the exams. The stakes are big: approximately $20,000 in scholarships will be awarded this year. The top 50 will be presented with scholarships ranging from the bronze awards of $250 to $2,500 for the first-place gold medalist.
