He was right, sort of.

Adamec was also there to be surprised. The Genesee County DAR awarded him the DAR Community Service Award for more than 40 years of service to the community, through teaching, community arts efforts and participation in the Empty Bowl program.

After Adamec’s presentation, DAR Community Service Committee chairwoman, Carol Powers, told Adamec that he was invited there with an “ulterior” motive, which was to present him with the award. Powers read the award to the assembled DAR members before presenting it to Adamec. According to the award, Adamec was instrumental in creating the Empty Bowl program which has become the Food Bank’s signature event, held annually on the last Thursday of September. In 2016, more than $60,000 was raised for the Food Bank, which is enough to supply more than 360,000 meals in 22 counties.

After receiving the award, Adamec said, “Everything we do is a result of people working together. Maybe it takes someone to bring everyone together, but it is the work of many people.”

You can try about 30 different types of soup. A restaurant donates the bread and we have live entertainment all day. So basically, you’re getting lunch, dessert and entertainment all for $25. And it’s a donation to the Food Bank.”

Talking about the growth of the program over the years. Adamec joked, “it’s kind of out of control.” According to Adamec, “The first year my students and I made approximately 300 bowls. The next year we made 500 bowls just like that, and then for the next year I said let’s make 1000 bowls. After that we would make 1000 bowls and sell them for $10 each.”

Adamec explained how the program ended up at the Food Bank.

“We would typically raise about $8,000 per year and we would split it between the food bank and the women’s shelter. In about 2010, we decided to change the program and move it directly to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. And that’s where it’s been ever since.”

After the presentation of the award, lunch was served, which was soup, of course.
