Goodrich loses district heartbreaker

Photo by Timothy Mucciante FLINT – The Goodrich varsity volleyball team needed just one more set win to take the Class B district title at Flint Powers last Thursday, but lost a true heartbreaker 16-14 in the final set.

Powers eked out the 25-22 first-set win, Goodrich took the second 25-16 and the third 25-19. Powers then edged out the Martians 25-22 in the fourth set and secured the district title with the fifth-set narrow win.

Emily Lafner had 17 kills, three aces, 20 digs, five blocks and four assists. Kristen Jankowski had three kills, 22 digs and 34 assists and Savannah Leist 23 digs and three assists. Kristen Danz had seven kills and seven blocks, Elli Foglio 11 kills and Adara Dawson three kills, five blocks and five digs. Maddison Haring had one kill, three aces and three digs, Diamond Pate five blocks and Olivia Francis eight digs. Anna Boomer chipped in with five digs. – L.P.

Class A at Flushing

Grand Blanc was edged out by Fenton in the battle for the district title last Thursday, 18-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-27. Game details were not reported.

Grand Blanc defeated Linden in the district semis, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13, 26-24, to advance to the district final. Hannah Carnell racked up 16 digs, 16 kills, 14 aces and a block on the game. Kelsie Vanitvelt chipped in 19 digs, 34 assists seven kills and an ace.

“The girls remained focused and stayed positive throughout our game against Linden,” said Grand Blanc coach Karly Cocke. “Our team worked very well together last night and we are very excited to be in the finals.”

Linden beat Carman-Ainsworth, 25-18, 25-22,25-19, in the district opener only to fall to Grand Blanc in the semis. Grand Blanc had also defeated Swartz Creek in the district opener, 25-8, 25-9, 25-17. On the other end of the bracket, Fenton beat Flint, 25-3, 25-9, 25-13, and then knocked out Flushing, 28-30, 27-25, 25-23, 25-22, to advance to the finals.

Fenton faced Davison in the regional semifinal at Mt. Pleasant Tuesday, eliminating Davison 3-2. Fenton faces Midland today at Mt. Pleasant for the regional title. – K.R.
