Raise the Woof Comedy gives animals boost

GRAND BLANC — It’s a hard knock life for some animals out there, who are abandoned and left to fend for themselves, and as in recent news, perhaps in a home but neglected to the point of death. Gretchen Sommer, of Lucky Day Animal Rescue, takes in many such animals who find themselves in cruel and unusual circumstances, through no fault of their own.

It’s a difficult undertaking that takes a big heart and big bucks! To that end, this year Sommer partnered with Raise the Woof, a stand-up comedy tour that benefits animal shelters, rescues and other related causes.

Created by comedian and producer James Uloth, Raise the Woof has raised more than $1 million for charity. During a recent fundraiser at Genesys Banquet Center, Uloth was joined by Andrew Wegleitner and Ron Lamprecht, both of Minneapolis. The trio raised about $4,000 for Sommer’s shelter, which houses cats, dogs and a passel of farm animals, including two pigs who would have been slaughtered had not Sommer intervened.

In addition to dozens of local businesses that donated merchandise featured in a silent auction, Sommer is assisted by her husband, Derek, owner of Spud Software, R & B Used Books and Briarwood Veterinary on a regular basis.

They also served as event sponsors, as well as Studio 11, the Four Paws Hotel and Day Resort, Kim Rose Fashions, and Attorney Craig McAra.

Many of Sommer’s rescues are animals who are in such tough situations as to make headlines, as is the case with Aaron, who was first found by a city worker in a trash can and believed to be deceased. He was rushed to an emergency vet, weighing only ten pounds.

He has now been adopted by his foster mom, Jodi Davis, and her family, and weighs more than 40 pounds. He is now happy, healthy and very well behaved.
