MILDRED A. CAREY,

91, of Bennington, NE (formerly of Grand Blanc and Plant City, FL) passed away in her sleep on October 14, 2016.

Milly was born on September 20, 1925, she was adopted and raised by Jay and Eva Vanderlip in Gowen, MI. Graduating from Central Michigan in 1947, she married John M. “Jack” Carey in 1948. She began a lifelong teaching career in the Grand Blanc Schools in 1949, retiring in 1992. During that time, she raised four children, provided founding leadership to the Grand Blanc Education Association, was an active member of the First Congregational Church and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She supported Jack’s efforts as Mayor of Grand Blanc for 15 years and as National Commander of the American Legion.

Milly was as comfortable organizing a neighborhood picnic as she was meeting Presidents and World Leaders. She took great pride in her role as a math teacher and the impact she had on her students.

Milly is preceded in death by Jack, her husband of 59 years; and son, Thomas.

She is survived by son, John (Beverly) of Lenexa, KS; daughter, Janice Privateer (Peter) of Buford, GA; daughter, Marcia Ellison (Stuart) of Bennington, NE; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A reception and Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, November 18th at 10:30 am, Grand Blanc American Legion Post #413, 375 E Grand Blanc Rd, Grand Blanc. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “American Legion Jack Carey Charity” at the Post address.
