Photos by Paula K. Schmidt GRAND BLANC — Kathy Felix, administrator of Abbey Park Independent Living in Grand Blanc, had resident Lillian Flinn in for an initial tour of the grounds, prior to becoming a resident, Flinn’s main concern was her pond and her fish.

Installed at her home by The Pond Store and More of Flint, owned by Diane and John Warner, we have been assured that the fish and pond are in good health with new owners, and Flinn has not been the inspiration of a new pond.

The Warner were contacted by Flinn’s daughter, Diana Currier and they were so touched by her concern for her former pond, they thought they might be able to bring a little water action to the residents at Abbey Park.

A communal garden in the court yard there, which had become less used than initially expected according to Felix, was chosen as the perfect spot. Felix was touched by Flinn’s concern for her fish and was going to contact The Pond Store until Currier intervened.

“I just thought, I would love to get something like that (for the residents,” Felix said. She added it was installed as part of The Pond Store and More’s Giving Back program and was installed at a significant discount. Felix explained the water feature, while not quite a pond, is a low maintenance added benefit for the residents.

According to the store’s website, “We believe that a water feature is an added benefit to any landscape and we also know from past experience that a water feature is both enjoyable and relaxing. It is a place to sit and connect to your sense of sight and sound. The Pond Store and More will supply the labor, equipment and experience to build the water feature at no cost to the customer other than to supply the location and pay for the materials only.”

The small waterfall will be accessible to all the residents, not just those who live on the courtyard as it is located off the breakfast and main dining areas. While short on community seating, which they hope to add in the future, Felix thinks it will be a great addition and help residents get outside more.

“It’s very nice, I like it,” Flinn said. The work was done over the day on June 3rd and will have to be hard wired for electricity by the facility’s electrician, who reviewed the installation on the following day.

Felix indicated they would be able to connect it under the sidewalk to make the installation safe for residents. The Pond Store and More is located at 4293 Crosby Rd. in Flint and can be reached at 810-736-9198 or online at www.thepondstoreandmore.com/.
