Alward to be inducted into Football Coaches Hall

ANN ARBOR — Longtime Goodrich football coach Tom Alward will be inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame this Saturday during a banquet at the Ann Arbor Sheraton.

Alward, 60, has coached for 35 years at Flint Central, Bendle and Goodrich, and has compiled a record of 196-137-1. He joins 13 other inductees who have a minimum of 20 years coaching or 100 wins.

Alward has coached the last 20 years at Goodrich, building a record of 121-80, two wins short of the school record set by Jerry Hughes from 1955-81. The Martians have won four Genesee Area Conference-Red titles under his watch, made the playoffs 11 times, won three district titles and reached four regional championship games.

Alward was a lineman at Bendle High, then at the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of the 1971 national championship team. He went on to play two years in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, from 1975-76.

The banquet starts with cocktails at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 and the program at 7:30. Tickets are $35. The featured speaker is University of Michigan coach Brady Hoke.

Grand Blanc grad to pitch in West Coast League

BELINGHAM, Wash. — Grand Blanc graduate Jason Hager, a red-shirt junior at Oakland University, will pitch this summer for the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast League. The Bells are a summer, wood-bat collegiate baseball team that prepares prospects for the pro ranks.

Hager is a 6-foot-1 left-hander who led Grand Blanc to two district titles before moving on to Oakland. He made three appearances as a freshman with the Grizzlies, then red-shirted the 2011 season. He was 5-3 last year with a 4.34 earnedrun average in 64.1 innings and led the team in strikeouts. He made the Summit League All- Tournament Team.

“Jason is versatile and could be used as a starter or closer,” said Bells assistant coach Jim Clem. “He is a seasoned lefty who will be a great person to have on our team.” — D.N.

Grand Blanc earns Football Sportsmanship Award

MILAN — Grand Blanc is among the first schools to receive the Football Sportsmanship Award from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association.

The award was started this year by the MHSFCA in partnership with the Michigan National Guard and the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Using officials’ ratings provided to the MHSAA after each game during the 2012 season, the top 100 teams rated for their sportsmanship will be presented banners recognizing the achievement. — D.N.

Detroit Lions Basketball Game slated in Lapeer

LAPEER — The 2013 Lapeer East Project Graduation Committee is sponsoring a Detroit Lions Basketball Game this Saturday, March 23, at Lapeer East High School. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the game will tip at 7 p.m.

Administrators and principals of Lapeer Community Schools and other local schools will take on a group of Lions (players’ names to be released at a later date) in a friendly basketball game.

Tickets are $10 per person or $36 for a family four pack and are available to purchase now at Lapeer Community Schools.

Grand Blanc grad First-Team pick in Horizon League

INDIANAPOLIS — Grand Blanc High graduate Shareta Brown was a First-Team pick on the All- Horizon League women’s basketball team after her standout season with the University of Detroit- Mercy. It was the second straight year Brown has earned First-Team honors, making her only the fourth Titan in history to receive two all-conference first-team honors.

A sophomore forward, Brown leads the Titans in scoring and is third in the league and 17th in the nation at 20.3 points per game. The sophomore forward also ranks first in the conference and sixth in the nation in field-goal percentage at 57.9 percent. She is third in the Horizon in rebounding at 9.3 per game and leads the league in offensive rebounds with a 4.1 average. — D.N.

Baseball camp set for May 4

GRAND BLANC — The Tools of the Trade Youth Baseball Camp will be held from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 4 at the Grand Blanc High varsity baseball field. The camp is open to youths ages 5-12 and will focus on the five tools of baseball: throwing and pitching, hitting, infield/outfield play, catching, and baserunning. Goodrich Youth Ball registration underway

GOODRICH — Registration has started for Goodrich Youth Ball and will run through April 12. Early bird registration ends March 15. Age divisions are 5 and 6 for T-ball (boys and girls); 7, 8, 9, and 10 for Girls Coach Pitch; 11, 12, 13 and 14 for Junior Girls; 7, 8 and 9 for Boys Coach Pitch; and 10, 11 and 12 for Pony Boys.

Player skill assessment clinics will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. April 17 for Girls Coach Pitch, 6:30-8 p.m. April 17 for Boys Coach Pitch, 5-6:30 p.m. April 24 for Pony Boys, and 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 24 for Junior Girls. All clinics will be held at the Goodrich Middle School fields. There are no evaluations for Tball.

Teams will assigned the week of May 6. Play begins the week of June 10 and runs through July 15-16, with playoffs July 17-25 for qualifying teams. Coaches, assistants and field work volunteers are needed, as are team sponsors.
